Sensitive Stone Cleaning to Period Home

Sensitive Stone Cleaning to Period Home

The Brief

This residential sandstone property had previously been subject to cleaning using an abrasive method. As a result, visible wear and erosion had developed across a number of architectural features, with sections of the stonework showing early signs of surface deterioration. In addition, areas of flaking masonry paint were present across parts of the frontage. These sections had become increasingly unsightly and were detracting from the overall appearance of the property. The visual balance of the front elevation had also been compromised. The main façade appeared significantly brighter than the entrance canopy, balcony, and balustrade areas, creating an inconsistent appearance across the elevation. Our client was keen to restore the appearance of the property while ensuring that any cleaning approach would not cause further damage to the sandstone

Our Approach

Our client was keen to restore the appearance of the property while ensuring that any cleaning approach would not cause further damage to the sandstone To achieve this, we undertook a carefully controlled, detailed cleaning process designed specifically for sensitive natural stone. Using the DOFF system which is superheated water at temperatures in excess of 100°C, we were able to gently remove the flaking masonry paint while also undertaking a controlled clean of the surrounding stonework. This approach allowed us to restore the visual appearance of the front elevation and rebalance the overall finish, while protecting the integrity of the sandstone and avoiding the risks associated with abrasive cleaning methods. The treatment removed: •Algae and organic growth •Surface staining and discolouration •Atmospheric contamination •General environmental soiling Special care was taken around original masonry joints and any decorative stonework, ensuring every detail of the building’s historic character was protected throughout.

Access & Safety

High-level elevations were accessed safely using a cherry picker (MEWP). Full risk assessments were completed prior to works commencing, with all activity carried out in compliance with current health and safety legislation.

Result

The natural tone and texture of the stonework were fully restored, bringing the property back to life while protecting its historic integrity for years to come.
